Mr. Gorman’s Guide to Chopping Out

Three Levels:

  1. Play to the beat

  2. Improvise to the beat (in meter)

  3. Improvise off the beat (out of meter)

Tips and Tricks

  • Find the beat - Especially at level 3, make sure to hold on to it

  • Stay relaxed and stay loose

  • Don’t be afraid to choose songs that you don’t know as well for a bit of an initial challenge

  • For a greater challenge, choose songs with faster tempos or irregular time signatures

29 Noteworthy Percussionists

Of course, there are many more important percussionists than those seen here (and several of these percussionists

could easily fit into multiple categories). Check out the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame for many more.

Limited Resources Clip.png

Limited Resources is a book of compiled exercises for bells. Written to work within the range limitations of bells often handed out to middle schoolers, I compiled together these exercises and familiar tunes to keep students moving at a slightly faster pace than your standard beginning band book
